Summary

When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan。 They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again。 One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other。 Aside from that, anything goes。

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage。 These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage。 She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

TJR does it again, top 5 books I read this entire year。 Sobbed。

Classic TJR! Probably one of the top three she’s written。 In fact, I put aside Carrie Soto because I stumbled across this and couldn’t put it down。 It had all the elements that make me love the author。 It had her trademark: Deep, moving conversations (the scene with her grandmother will stick with me for a long time) and powerful character exploration/development that felt organic and relatable。 This book made me think and feel so much! Her characters all came at the themes from different angles Classic TJR! I am going through a reading slump but i was bound and determined to finish this one。 I absolutely adore TJR, and most of her books have been 5 star reads for me! This one was really good, and I think it’s important to point out that marriage isn’t easy and it is when 2 imperfect people refuse to give up on each other。 This book was such a great read。

'perspicapious' (yeah i had to google it too) is the word i'd describe this book with。 this one discusses and makes you think on different opinions and perspectives about love, which you never thought to do so before。 'perspicapious' (yeah i had to google it too) is the word i'd describe this book with。 this one discusses and makes you think on different opinions and perspectives about love, which you never thought to do so before。 。。。more

I wanted to not like this book。 I hated how Ryan and Lauren treated each other and their solution goes against my personal grain。 But (the word the wipes away all of the words before it) I ended up loving it。 TJR has a way of spinning stories about relationships into gold。 From our own inherent ugliness she finds ways to buff mistakes into fragile beautiful moments and traits。 When I finish a book and it makes me sad it’s over…。 It’s a good one。 I’m stingy with 5’s…。 But this one is the highest I wanted to not like this book。 I hated how Ryan and Lauren treated each other and their solution goes against my personal grain。 But (the word the wipes away all of the words before it) I ended up loving it。 TJR has a way of spinning stories about relationships into gold。 From our own inherent ugliness she finds ways to buff mistakes into fragile beautiful moments and traits。 When I finish a book and it makes me sad it’s over…。 It’s a good one。 I’m stingy with 5’s…。 But this one is the highest 4 I’ve rated。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Lauren and Ryan’s dynamics is the reason the older generations think we don’t try hard enough。 They essentially threw in the towel。 Ryan wanted a pass to go sleep with other women and get his ego stoked。 Nothing will convince me otherwise。I found myself cringing most of the book。 Gave it 3 ⭐️ because at the end of the day I was intrigued enough to finish the book。Also Californian’s are rude。 What is up with this narrative?

Thank you TJR for reaffirming my fear in marriage 😭😭 I can’t put into words how real and honest this felt - and just the pain (in a good way) this book left me with

Great airport read or if you’re looking for something “lighter” to read。 TJR never fails and I found myself doing a lot of self reflection on my own life after I finished。 I think a great follow up idea would be the year from Ryan’s pov

3。5 stars This book is definitely TJR on the way to hitting her stride, thought not quite there yet。 It was a little more romance than I usually like, but it was an easy listen and appreciate that the story has held up over time。 I didn't like that emotions were always so extreme and often contradictory to what you'd expect。 There was a little too simpering self-pity for me。 I listened to a new recording of this narrated by Julia Whelan and as always, she was excellent。 After the book there was 3。5 stars This book is definitely TJR on the way to hitting her stride, thought not quite there yet。 It was a little more romance than I usually like, but it was an easy listen and appreciate that the story has held up over time。 I didn't like that emotions were always so extreme and often contradictory to what you'd expect。 There was a little too simpering self-pity for me。 I listened to a new recording of this narrated by Julia Whelan and as always, she was excellent。 After the book there was about a 25 minute conversation between Reid and Whelan talking about this book and others, and how Whelan feels about doing TJR's books。 Reis also shared her motivation for writing this and other of her books。 I really liked listening to this interview。 。。。more

The author presents the idea that a couple, who has decided they aren't in love anymore, should separate for a year and not even speak to each other。 On top of that, they try to fall back in love with each other by having sex with other people to see if their marriage can work。 Seriously???This is the fifth book from Taylor Jenkins Reid I read and didn't like at all。 I was not fond of the main characters, found both Lauren and Ryan to be intolerable and I didn’t care if they got back together or The author presents the idea that a couple, who has decided they aren't in love anymore, should separate for a year and not even speak to each other。 On top of that, they try to fall back in love with each other by having sex with other people to see if their marriage can work。 Seriously???This is the fifth book from Taylor Jenkins Reid I read and didn't like at all。 I was not fond of the main characters, found both Lauren and Ryan to be intolerable and I didn’t care if they got back together or not。In addition, it's a slow and boring novel。 Most of the time Lauren spends time either at work or hanging out with her family and nothing ever happens。At some point, I just got sick of it and constantly wanted this to be over。For me, this book was just a waste of time。 。。。more

i love tjr so much。 this book was so good, it’s so underrated。 the different perspectives of love and marriage from each character was so interesting。 i enjoyed how lauren was content with herself by the end of it but still knew ryan was a part of her。 i loved this book and would always recommend, an amazing emotional read 5/5 ❤️

I’ve been feeling like I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but then I gave myself grace and reframed to say Ive been taking it a bit slower。 Revisiting my “wintering” process I learned from the book with the same title last year (read that book btw, it’s wonderful!) I was also trying to find the right “next” book to read to set the season。 It wasn’t this one。 Introducing my least favorite Taylor Jenkins Reid book。 I took this one slower because by the time I realized I didn’t like this story I’ve been feeling like I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but then I gave myself grace and reframed to say Ive been taking it a bit slower。 Revisiting my “wintering” process I learned from the book with the same title last year (read that book btw, it’s wonderful!) Honestly, I expected much more。 The writing is definitely not my style, too descriptive of things that don't actually matter for the plot of the story。 I can tell that the author tried to communicate that there are different ways to handle a marriage, but ultimately I couldn't stand the main character for her "I am not complete unless I have someone" thinking。 Honestly, I expected much more。 The writing is definitely not my style, too descriptive of things that don't actually matter for the plot of the story。 I can tell that the author tried to communicate that there are different ways to handle a marriage, but ultimately I couldn't stand the main character for her "I am not complete unless I have someone" thinking。 。。。more
